A little summary of Habitat

Most people know what Habitat is all about; but there are always those few people that know nothing about it. We don't just build houses for poor people nor do we give houses away for free. Thousands of people apply for Habitat homes each year. The selection process is based almost entirely on the family. Many families only have one parent. One of the biggest questions when reviewing an application is can the family pay for the house. This isn't like buying a house on the market. No one applying for a Habitat home can afford that. Habitat homes are built at cost, turning no profit. That is exactly what we charge the family. Through Habitat's own banking system, the family is given a NO interest loan on the house for which they make small payments on. The payments from that family's house buy the supplies needed to build the next house. It's pretty much a never ending circle of support and there is always more needed. We were actually just awarded nationally for being recognized as one of the most active Campus Chapters. It's come a long way in a few short years and there's always more improvements to be made.

I have gone on two spring break trips with habitat and they were great experiences. We had the opportunity to meet with the families that were going to live in houses that we were building. The future owners’s of the house have to do a lot of work themselves. As you said, they are not just handed the keys to the house. They have to put in several hours of work on habitat houses, along with other requirements.
